USU student wins the championship of Russia in sambo among the blind
Students of the flagship university Svetlana Mikhailova and Andrei Vankin successfully performed at the Russian Sambo Championship in Ramensky, the Moscow Region, and the Russian Judo Cup in Moscow. The athletes won the “gold”, “silver” and two “bronzes” of the competition among participants with visual impairments.
A 3rd year student of the department of adaptive physical education Svetlana Mikhailova took the bronze of the Russian Judo Cup and became the country's champion in sambo, which allowed her to enter the national team. “I’m taking part in such competitions for the first time. I really liked the competitive spirit, I want to continue to perform. Now I am going to train a lot ”said Svetlana.
Freshman of the Department of Physical Culture Andrei Vankin won the bronze medal of the Judo Cup competitions and the silver medal of the Russian Sambo Championship: “This is my first significant success in sambo. It was interesting to fight. I already had competitive experience, but still I felt nervous a little. There are few starts for athletes with visual impairments - we don’t have many opportunities to show our skills and analyze our strengths and weaknesses. I will work to improve my result next year”.
Andrei added that getting a higher education at USU is very exciting: “Perhaps, in the future I will also help in training athletes with disabilities.”
