Independence from Portugal was proclaimed on September 24, 1973. The military coup in Portugal in April 1974 opened up prospects for the recognition of freedom, and in August the government of Lisbon signed an agreement granting the independence to this province. The Republic of Guinea-Bissau was officially recognized by Portugal on September 10, 1974. Independence Day has become an annual national holiday.
