Medical and biological Research Center of the Institute of Medicine, Ecology and Physical Education


Medical and biological research center (USU MBRC) was established within the Strategic Development Program of Ulyanovsk State University for 20122016

The primary purpose of establishing the MBRC is to ensure the research development, to set up and develop a research, technical and teaching laboratory base for student practical training as well as to train highly qualified personnel and support USU scientific schools of thought. It is also to serve s a source to provide practicing doctors and their patients with high quality, up-to-date and reliable results of laboratory studies for making a correct diagnosis and choosing a treatment tactics.

The center’s activity is regulated by the Provision on Medical and biological research center of Ulyanovsk State University that was approved by the decision of the USU Academic Council of 25.12.2013 and current license for administrating medical activity FL 73-01000625of 19.03.14.

MBRC incorporates 5 laboratories: biochemical, immunological, immunihistochemical, PCR-diagnostics, post-genome technologies, all of them located on the ground floor of the classroom building in Sviyaga River Embankment Street.

Objectives of the MBRC:

1. Laboratory examination by means of available equipment to ensure the research activity of the teaching staff, postgraduates and university staff members

2. Advanced work techniques introduction, new methods of research that possess a high analytic accuracy and diagnostic reliability

3. Counseling support for doctors of public and private healthcare institutions in selection of lab tests which are more diagnostically informative and assist in interpretation of laboratory examination

4. Clinical and other laboratory studies for physical and legal entities in a scope of the studies nomenclature formalized by the license

Laboratory of immunohistochemistry

Research area of the laboratory is concerned with the morphometric analysis of cardiovascular, reproductive and digestive systems of a human body and an animal under normal and pathological conditions, in experimental manipulations.

The immunohistochemistry laboratory enables to make a pathomorphologic analysis and a diagnosis of tumors of various histogenesis; to conduct: diagnostics of autoimmune diseases, a search for infective agents, an evaluation of the functionality state and a cell receptor status, an evaluation of the proliferative evaluation and apoptosis in various pathologies.

Biochemistry laboratory

Research area the study of redox-dependent processes, lipid peroxidation parameters in particular, oxidative protein modifications, antioxidant activity in oncological pathologies, cardiovascular diseases and hypoxic states.

The biochemistry laboratory except other traditional clinical studies was established to carry out monitoring of the antioxidant status of blood (determination in a biomaterial the enzymes activity of antioxidant protection superoxididdismutase, catalase, glutationreductase, glutationtransferase, glutathione restored, etc.); lipoperoxidation of all levels to estimate oxidizing modification of proteins in haemolysate of erythrocytes, homogenates of tissues and blood serum.

Immunology laboratory

Research area study of non-specific immunity in a carcinogenesis dynamics, and in particular while diagnosing and predicting the progress of ovarian cancer and cervial cancer.

The immunology laboratory is designed to control the humoral immune status, identification of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines, to make diagnoses of HIV infection; viral hepatitises; urogenital infections; viral intestinal infections.

Determination of cardiomarkers (S-reactive protein, N-terminal fragment of brain natriuretic peptide, the protein binding fatty acids, troponin I, myoglobin), tumor markers (concentration of chorion gonadotrophic hormone, free β-sub-units of chorion gonadotrophic hormone, of cancer embryonic anti-gene, alpha- fetaprotein, a free fraction of prostate- specific anti-gene, a tumoral marker of CA-125, CA 153, CA 19-9).

Laboratory of PCR-diagnostics

The research area of the laboratory study of a role of microRNA in the ovarian cancer progress and cervical cancer, the study of BRCA 1, BRCA 2mutations.

The laboratory is equipped to conduct a wide range of investigations by PCR method in real time for high-quality and quantitative confirmation of sexually transmitted infections (STD), diagnosis of HIV, hepatitises, papillomoviral, herpes viral infections, etc.

The PCR method raises diagnostics to an essentially other level the level of DNA or RNA determination that allows to detect an infectious agent or a genetic mutation.

By means of the established laboratory it will be possible:

to determine one-nucleotide polymorphisms of cytokines genes and other proteins of the immune system and evaluation of the immune system of an organism.

- to determine the risk extent of oncological and cardiovascular diseases by means of marker genes.

Laboratory of post-genomic technologies

The study of molecular, cell and genomic technologies for health evaluation, diagnostics and prediction of pathologic processes.

The study of dynamic changes of expression profiles of cancer cell genes in various time intervals after the effect of alpha and gamma radiation.

The study of direct delivery processes of medicine, genetic material and radionuclides into cancer cells by means of nano-particles.

The stochastic analysis of the radiation induced dynamics of cancer cell transcriptome.
