Fraud with bank cards
A bank card is the tool to make payments and access to cash on the account which doesn’t require presence at the bank. But simplicity of use of bank cards leaves a number of loopholes for swindlers.
HOW IT IS ARRANGED:
The message comes to you that your bank card has been blocked. You are offered to call free of charge on a certain number for obtaining detailed information.
When you call the specified telephone number, you are told that on the server which is responsible for the card service there was a failure, and then you are asked to report the card number and the PIN code for its re-registration.
ACTUALLY THE FOLLOWING TAKES PLACE:
To rob you, malefactors need only a number of your card and a PIN code. As soon as you report them, money will be withdrawn from your account.
HOW TO ACT IN SUCH SITUATION:
The department «K» of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation warns: don't hurry to report details of your card! Any organization, including the bank, does not have the right to ask for your PIN code! To check the incoming information on the card blocking it is necessary to call a client support service of the bank. Most likely, you will be answered that no failures on the server happened, and your card continues to be served by the bank.

How to protect yourself from swindlers
Recently the growth of fraud cases with plastic cards has been observed. The department «K» of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation recommends all owners of plastic cards to follow safety rules:
PIN-CODE - A KEY to YOUR MONEY
• Never tell anybody the PIN code of your card. It is best of all to memorize it. You should treat the PIN code as a key from the safe with your means.
• You should never keep the PIN code near your card and more of that to write down the PIN code on it — in this case you won't even manage to secure the account, even having had the card blocked after theft or loss.
YOUR CARD — ONLY YOURS
Don't allow anybody to use your plastic card this is the same that you give the purse, without counting the sum of money in it.
NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO ASK FOR YOUR PIN-CODE
If you were called from any organization, or you received a letter by e-mail (including from the bank) with a request to report details of the card and the PIN code on various pretexts, you should not hurry to do it. Call the specified organization and report about this fact. Do not go into the links specified in the letter as they can lead to the spoofsites. Remember: keeping bank card details and the PIN code in secret is your responsibility and duty.
IMMEDIATELY HAVE THE CARD BLOCKED IN CASE OF ITS LOSS
If you have lost the card, urgently contact the bank which had issued it, report the matter and follow the instructions of the bank employee. For this purpose you should keep the phone number of the bank in a memopad or in the list of contacts of your mobile phone.
USE THE PROTECTED ATMS
When carrying out operations with the card use only those ATMs which are located in safe places and are equipped with the system of video surveillance and protection: in public institutions, banks, large shopping centers, etc.
The citizens using ATMs without video surveillance can be attacked by malefactors.
BE AFRAID OF STRANGERS
• Making operations with a plastic card, you should avoid having strangers around you. If it is impossible, draw money from a card later or use another ATM.
• Dialing the PIN code, cover the keyboard with a hand.
• Details and any other information about how much money you withdrew and what digits you pressed can be used by swindlers.
THE ATM HAS TO BE «PURE»
Pay attention to a card reader and the ATM keyboard. If they are equipped with any additional devices, it is better to refrain from use of this ATM and report about your suspicions by phone specified on it.
THE ATM HAS TO BE COMPLETELY SERVICEABLE
In case of incorrect operation of the ATM — if it is in the stand-by mode for a long time or spontaneously reboots — refuse its use. There is a great probability that it has been reprogrammed by malefactors.
CONSULT ONLY AT THE BANK
Never resort to help or advice of the third parties when carrying out operations with the bank card in ATMs. Contact your bank — it is obliged to provide consulting services in work with the card.
DON NOT ENTRUST THE CARD TO WAITERS AND SELLERS
In outlets, restaurants and cafes all manipulations with your card have to take place at your presence. Otherwise swindlers can receive details of your card by means of special devices and use them further to produce counterfeited cards.
