A third of USU international students are citizens from African countries

The development of cooperation in the scientific and educational areas between the Russian Federation and Africa is being discussed these days at the Russia-Africa forum in Sochi under the co-chairmanship of the Presidents of Russia and Egypt, Vladimir Putin and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. With the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, a panel discussion “Russia-Africa: Economic Development through Science, Education and Innovation” was held. It was attended by Mikhail Kotyukov, Head of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Igor Morozov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture, Russian Rector Peoples' Friendship University Vladimir Filippov, representatives of African countries, experts.

The Ministry intends to expand cooperation in the field of science and education with African countries, and is currently preparing to sign memoranda of scientific, scientific and technical activities with Mozambique and Namibia.

Today, 337 representatives of African countries study at Ulyanovsk State University, which is one third of the total number of international students at the university. This year alone, the student family of USU has increased by 142 African students. These are mainly young people from Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco. The main course that African students choose to study is medicine. In view of the large number of international students, the instruction in lectures and practical classes at the USU Faculty of Medicine have recently started in English.

the Association of International Students has been founded at the University. Youths from African countries are active participants in all university events. The tradition was the national holidays of representatives of different countries, where they familiarize Russian students and young people from other countries with the culture of African countries. Africa Day is celebrated at USU every year.

... “We expect further expansion of the diverse humanitarian cooperation between the Russian Federation and Africa, primarily in the field of higher education and scientific research” said the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Mikhail Kotyukov. “Now opportunities and ways to increase the number of students in the coming years are being explored from the states of the African continent in Russian universities”.
