The world university ranking has been conducted by Quacquarelli Symonds (England) since 2004.
QS University Rankings: BRICS — the ranking of the best universities in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The ranking is compiled on eight indicators, among them the quality of educational programs, international cooperation, the number of international students, etc. The 2013 ranking was devised in cooperation with the Russian agency “Interfax” to reflect the priority areas for the development of BRICS universities.
In August 2013, USU first applied to the QS-ranking, and then began the preparatory activity for participation in the 2014 ranking on the performance indexes of 2013. At the request of the QS administration in the second phase in November 2013, s a detailed statistical information was provided on the staff structure, including teaching staff (full-time, part-time, with  Ph.D. and Doctor’s degree), and the student contingent (full-time, part-time, part-time) of all training levels (baccalaureate, specialty, magistracy, residency, postgraduate study, doctoral studies).
On the basis of the collected data, in December 2013, the QS University Rankings BRICS mini-ranking was the first international ranking of the universities of the BRICS countries. Unfortunately, in the aggregate of all criteria USU could not get in top 100. However, according to the criterion of «International students», Ulyanovsk State University took 98th place.
In 2014 and 2015 USU failed to participate in either  full-scale QS-ranking or mini-ranking of QS-BRICS.
In October 2015, the results of the new international mini-ranking of QS University Rankings EECA — universities of developing countries in Europe and Central Asia — were published. USU was included in the general ranking list while on the criterion "Representation in the Internet" was ranked 111, according to the criterion «Citation of scientific articles» got 130th place.
In June 2016, the results of the international mini-ranking of QS University Rankings were published: EECA — universities of developing countries in Europe and Central Asia. USU was among top-200 best universities in the region, taking 151–200 place  and 60th place among Russian universities.
In July 2016, the results of the international mini-rating of QS University Rankings were published: BRICS of the ranking of universities of the BRICS countries.
