Honorary professorship conferred upon Virginia Gumley
An honorary professor degree was bestowed upon Virginia Gumley, a prominent palliative care activist, on January 11, 2008, during an annual festive meeting of the USU Board of trustees, which is traditionally devoted to recognizing university and community leaders.
Mrs. Gumley, an Irish citizen, is currently director of nursing at Shaukat Khanum memorial cancer hospital and research center in Lahore, Pakistan. She has for many years worked in close cooperation with palliative care providers in Ulyanovsk region, helping establish a hospice, one of the first in the country, and providing expert advice to the staff, many of whom are also USU faculty members.
While in Ulyanovsk, Mrs. Gumley made several visits to the hospice to meet the staff and patients. In addition, she made a presentation for students and faculty of the school of medicine, which focused on the role of palliative care in today’s society and her personal experience in the field.
Since 1997, 28 education, culture, medicine and political leaders have received the honorary degree from USU.
