Germany Days in Ulyanovsk
Germany Days in Ulyanovsk, held December 5-11, brought to our city a large delegation of politicians, educators, artists, business and community leaders, whose busy schedule here included meetings with senior city officials, visits to joint ventures, tours of historical sites, participation in performances and exhibitions. Several of the events took place on USU campus, among them the round-table discussion of the Bologna process, attended by students of four higher educational institutions of Ulyanovsk.
The attendees - representatives of USU, technical, pedagogical and agricultural universities – talked about the impending shift to the two-level system of higher education with a member of the guest delegation, prof. Armen Mulkidjanyan. A faculty member of Moscow State University, active in the field of bio-informatics and bioethics, Prof. Mulkidjanyan has recently worked at Osnabrueck University, USU partner institution, where he is responsible for cooperative programs with Russia. The guest contrasted the current educational system in Russia with the German two-level model and shared his views on possible effects of the upcoming reform.
On December 6, USU hosted the German ambassador in Russia, Mr. Valter Jürgen Schmid, who visited the Russian-German faculty (RGF), a unique academic unit offering the opportunity to complete both a Russian and a German degree. The ambassador toured the study facilities and answered RGF students’ questions about living and studying in Germany. More guests of honor on USU campus included two representatives of the German-Russian friendship society from Krefeld, a sister city of Ulyanovsk. Chairman Helmut Kupski, a USU honorary professor, and Raitz von Frentz were offered a comprehensive campus tour featuring a visit to the Russian-German faculty, which has over the years enjoyed their generous help.
Other notable events off campus included the opening ceremony of the new dialysis center constructed by Fresenius Medical Care, the groundbreaking for a Henkel Bautechnik facility, a German cinema festival, a jazz concert, a German cuisine night.
