Peer volunteers meet at USU teen rehab center
The II Regional student volunteers festival was held November 15-18 at the USU Teenager Rehabilitation Center. The event brought together representatives of five higher educational institutions of Ulyanovsk region who help troubled teens with substance abuse issues and provide support to the HIV-positive.
The festival program included contests and training sessions to help the participating students bond and apply the newly obtained information about methods of AIDS and substance abuse prevention. The lively team-building activities were conducted by their peers, staff members of the center.
“Peer-led education is the most effective prevention method and, as such, is crucial to reducing risk-taking behavior”, said Dmitry Dolmatov, deputy director of the regional alcohol and drug treatment clinic. Other speakers at the festival were USU rector Boris Kostisko and assistant to the governor of Ulyanovsk region Tatiana Gubareva.
