Computer literacy for schoolchildren
During the recent school holidays October 29 – November 6, USU Computer Literacy Center opened its doors to schoolchildren.
The opportunity to participate in the «Information Dissemination and Equal Access» program (IDEA) was offered to a group of kids from “Nightingale Grove”, one of the several children’s homes in Ulyanovsk region supported by the university.
The children, aged 11–18, were particularly interested in learning how to use the Internet and mastering the basics of web design, the skills they hope to apply in practice while building a website of their home.
Upon completion of the course, all of the participants were awarded official Microsoft certificates. An agreement was reached to offer more computer literacy lessons to “Nightingale Grove” children in the future.
On November 2, the Computer Literacy Center hosted the final stage of “My favorite book’s cover” contest dedicated to the nationally celebrated Year of Reading. The contest was open to schoolchildren of Ulyanovsk and Altai regions, as well as the Republic of Udmurtia.
Out of 60 computer designs of book covers originally submitted by the participants, the jury had selected 35, whose authors were invited to the final competition.
Many of the kids, who demonstrated great skill in using PhotoShop, CorelDraw and Powerpoint, surprised the jury with their bright and original ideas, as, for instance, the youngest participant Danila Kuzmin from Dimitrovgrad who came up with a cover for a collection of his own stories.
